Located in the Arabian Sea off India's southwestern coast, it includes 27 islands (10 of which are inhabited), with a total land area of 12 sq mi (32 sq km). The capital is Kavaratti. Once ruled by the Hindu Kulashekhara dynasty, it became part of an Islamic dominion in the 12th century.
  Britain gained sovereignty over it in the 18th century and assumed direct administration in 1908. It passed to India in 1947 and became the nation's smallest union territory in 1956. Coconut palms are the agricultural mainstay, while fishing is the chief industry.   With tranquil lagoons and miles of sun-drenched sandy beaches where the only sound are the crash of waves and the breeze blowing through the palm trees. The five islands that are inhabited are Kavaratti, Kalpeni, Kadamat, Minicoy, and Bangaram. They are ideal for fishing, yatching and sea diving.

The Kadmat Island particularly a fine lagoon, of even depth, and endless shoreline, making it a Heaven of solitude. And this makes it perfect for swimming. A fullfledged water sports institute is functioning here. The institute provides facilities for different disciplines of water sports.   The administrative capital is Kavaratti, and it is the most developed of the Islands. Kavaratti has an aquarium and museum with several colorful species of fishes. The town is noted for the ornately carved pillars and roofs of its mosques.   Bangaram Island, fringed by a continuous silvery beach. The Bangaram Island Resort, is a 128 acres of tropical paradise and is encircled by a lagoon 10 kms. long and 6 kms. wide. The water is crystal clear and immensely rich in a variety of sea life including corals.
  The night stay will be in huts which are situated on the beach in ideal locations. Only cold water will be served and there are beach bar for refreshment.
